Abstract
A field study on the effectiveness of diaminodiphenylsulfone(D. D. S.) as a suppressive agent for chloroquine resistant Plasmodium falciparum malaria was cairried on the Republic of Korea Forces in Vietnam from November 11, 1966 to anuary 11, 1967.
During this study 1399 soldiers located in a known malaria endemic area were divided into two groups according to their army serial number; 702 soldie(seven serial number) were selected as the study group and 697 soldiers (odd serial number) as the control group.
The study group members were given one D. D.S.(25 mg) tablet every day, and one chloroquine(300 mg)-primaquine(45 mg) combined tablet once week during the study period of 48 days. On the other hand, the control group members were given one placebo tablet every day and one chioroquineprimaquine :tablet once a week during the same period.
During this study, there were 111 cases of malaria which were admitted in hospital. Thirty-eight of 111 cases came from the D. D. S. used study group and 73 from the placebo used control-group.
This difference in malaria case between the study group and the control group was significant statistically.
